In January this year, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had confirmed that the company’s next flagship smartphone would be released by the end of the second quarter. While there are still several weeks left for the smartphone’s official unveiling, leaks have started surfacing online already. Alleged live images of the OnePlus 6 have surfaced on the web, revealing an iPhone X-like notch on top of the display as well as a vertical dual-camera setup on the back.
OnePlus 6: iPhone X-Inspired Design?
If the images posted online by Chinese blog ITHome are indeed the real deal, then it does look like the OnePlus 6 will have a notch on the front. Since the notch on the iPhone X isn’t exactly loved by most people, most OnePlus fans had a negative opinion regarding the design seen in the leaked live images.
While the authenticity of the OnePlus 6 live images has not been verified yet, it does seem highly likely that the OnePlus 6 will actually have a notch on top of the display. If you are a OnePlus fan, you would be aware that OnePlus flagships are usually very similar to OPPO flagships in the design department. OPPO recently teased its upcoming R15 and R15 Plusflagship smartphones on Weibo, clearly showing a notch at the top. The OnePlus 5 design was almost identical to that of the OPPO R11, while the OnePlus 5T is virtually indistinguishable from the OPPO R11s. Once OPPO makes the R15 and R15 Plus official, we should have a very clear idea about the OnePlus 6’s overall design.
OnePlus 6: Rumored Specifications
For now, the only key detail regarding the OnePlus 6 that has been officially confirmed is the chipset inside. When OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will be launched in late Q2 2018, he also confirmed that the upcoming flagship will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 octa-core SoC under the hood. That’s hardly a surprise, though, as pretty much all major Android flagship smartphones this year are expected to be powered by the same chipset. In terms of memory, the OnePlus 6 will likely be offered in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants, just like the OnePlus 5T.
Apart from the notch on top of the display, the OnePlus 6 is rumored to share one other key feature with the iPhone X. Recent reports have suggested that the OnePlus 6 could come equipped with advanced facial recognition technology that will be “as good as Face ID”. In addition to the front-facing camera, the facial recognition solution on the OnePlus 6 will include an infrared 3D camera module as well, which should help make it significantly more secure than the Face Unlock feature on the OnePlus 5T.
As you can see in the images above, the OnePlus 6 features a dual-camera setup at the rear with an LED flash and a fingerprint sensor placed below it. Slightly below the fingerprint sensor is the OnePlus logo. Sadly, not much is known about the key specifications of the two sensors at this point.
In terms of software, the live images of the smartphone suggest OnePlus will be launching it with the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box, with the OxygenOS overlay on top.
